Product Launches: New Self-Paced Tutorial Courses

Students have busy lives, so they need flexible learning options that fit their schedule. In August 2018, we rolled out our Self-Paced Tutorials (SPT) courses to give students more control of their learning environment. SPT courses let students work through the course material on their own time, at their own pace.

We added 48 more SPT titles to the catalog, all of which correspond to an existing instructor-led Fundamentals course.

When a student wants to enroll in the Fundamentals titles listed below, they can now choose between two learning modalities — self-paced or instructor-led:

Product Revision: Human Resources Professional

The growing need for a skilled workforce has shifted how employers search for qualified candidates. Holding a credential gives job seekers a competitive edge. Our revised Human Resources Professional (GES419) title prepares students for the Professional in Human Resources® (PHR) certification exam.

This is also the first ed2go release to use a curriculum design that emphasizes a competency-based learning objective. Keeping transparency in mind, students will work through the course with a defined learning objective clearly mapped out. Each lesson module focuses on certain skills or knowledge needed to master the competency, with explanation of how this relates to the overall learning objective.

Additionally, the Human Resources Professional title features a new page design for easy navigation and compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

ed2go prides itself on using real-world data to create courses that address workforce demand. We will continue improving our catalog to better train your students for success in today’s job market. Stay tuned for more course updates and announcements in the coming months!

Product Launches: Horse Care and Professional Life Coach Courses

ed2go prides itself on offering courses that speak to workforce demand and employer need. We added three unique additions to the catalog to prepare your students for some of today’s most in-demand jobs.

Read more about these new titles and what you need to do to add them to your course catalog.

What do you need to do:

If you’ve elected to auto-add new titles to your catalog, then no further action is required. You can start promoting these courses immediately. Otherwise, you will need to add them manually in the online administration center. If you’re not sure if you have the auto-add feature set up, contact your Account Manager.

Horse Care Management (GES190)

Knowledge of horse care techniques opens an extensive range of career opportunities. The equestrian industry in the United States has a $122 billion economic impact and employs some 1.7 million jobs. Those with an in-depth knowledge of horse care may find employment opportunities in the horse industry at stables, breeding farms, riding schools, and more.

Horse Care Management offers a comprehensive study of equine science and the practical application of these scientific concepts. Upon completion, students will have learned several facets of horse care and horse management, including daily care, handling techniques, and training principles.

Veterinary Assistant with Horse Care Management

Veterinary Assistant with Horse Care Management teaches the specialized skills that stables, equestrian centers, and large animal veterinary facilities look for. Together, these courses provide the comprehensive training needed to be a veterinary assistant with an additional focus on horse care techniques.

Students will gain a breadth of knowledge that can take them from the veterinary office to the stables and beyond. The Veterinary Assistant with Horse Care Management track teaches students how to be an asset when caring for or treating a horse, from assisting with surgical procedures to measuring vitals.

Certified Professional Life Coach (Exam Included)

Professional life coaching has grown into a $2 billion industry, with demand for certified life coaches on the rise. More and more, organizations are hiring coaches to help their employees develop leadership capabilities and increase performance and productivity.

The Certified Professional Life Coach (Exam Included) course teaches the strategies for applying the IAPRC Code of Ethics, ICF Core Competencies, and other recognized coaching concepts. Upon course completion, students will hold the specialized skills needed to take the certified life coach exam and establish their own successful coaching business.

If you plan to add these titles to the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL), you should apply for approval as soon as possible. If you need more information, please contact your account manager.

Adding, Removing, and Pricing Self-Paced Tutorial Courses

We’re adding 45 Self-Paced Tutorial courses, counterparts to existing instructor-led Fundamentals, to the catalog on August 8, 2018. This release also modifies GeoLocation and Affinity rules in the ed2go portal, which affects partners who choose not to offer Self-Paced Tutorial (SPT) courses.

Below is a list of frequently asked questions about adding and removing SPT courses from your catalog.

Can I offer an instructor-led course and not offer the SPT counterpart? Or vice-versa?

Yes. You can include or exclude courses and modalities as you see fit. However, the SPT launch modifies the GeoLocation and Affinity rules, so not offering a modality will impact how your institution appears in the ed2go portal.

Will not offering SPT courses also affect partner-hosted sites?

No. This release only modifies what appears in the ed2go portal. When a partner school does not offer both modalities, nearby partners that offer the missing modality will also populate on the course details page. Students can then choose which is more important to them, modality or partner.Screen Shot 2018-08-03 at 9.38.26 AM

How can I remove SPT courses from my catalog? They were automatically added based on my catalog settings.

Step 1: In the OAC Catalog, filter by product type “Self-Paced Tutorial.”

Step 2: In the course list, search for the course you wish to remove and uncheck the box next to the title.

Picture 2

Step 3: After the box is unchecked, click the Remove button and review your selection below.

Picture 3

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all the desired titles are removed.

How can I add SPT courses to my catalog, since they were not auto-added?

Similar to removing courses, filter products by type. Then, search by course and check the box to add.

Picture 4

Repeat this until all the desired titles are added.

How are SPT courses priced?

Default pricing is the same for SPT courses and their instructor-led counterpart. The prices are the same so the value proposition is learning preference, not cost. Ideally, students will choose the modality that best fits their need without focusing on the price. However, you may have policy that requires you to price course types (self-paced or instructor-led) differently. The OAC allows you to adjust the price if needed.

What’s happens next?

We will send out an announcement with the list of new SPT courses on launch date. If you have further questions, please contact your Account Managers for more information.

Course Discontinuations and Replacements

A changing job market means up-to-date knowledge and industry-recognized credentials have higher value. To prepare your students for a career, we regularly retire and replace courses. The following courses will be retired, so we recommend directing your students to these titles instead:

Fundamentals courses discontinued on August 29, 2018:

  • Photoshop Elements 12 for the Digital Photographer (p21) and Photoshop Elements 12 for the Digital Photographer II (p22) will be retired due to outdated curriculum and low enrollment. However, our Photoshop Elements for the Digital Photographer (p31) is continually updated and would be the better option for students interested in learning photo editing skills.
  • Mac, iPhone, and iPad Programming (mip) will be retired due to outdated course content and low enrollment.

Advanced Career Training courses discontinued on September 7, 2018:

  • Certified SAS Base Programmer Certification Training (GES391) and Apache Cassandra Training (GES380) will both be cancelled due to outdated curriculum. Our Oracle SQL and PL/SQL Developer (GES 336) course is an ideal alternative for students looking to master database software and build their professional profile.
  • CTFL Certification Training (GES389) will be discontinued due to outdated content. While there are no exact alternatives for this course, we encourage you to browse other career training courses.

Advanced Career Training course revisions on July 31, 2018*:

  • Advanced Hospital Coding and CCS Prep (Voucher Included) (GES104) will include the CCS certification examination voucher and course hours will increase from 80 to 100. There is no price increase for this course.

If you are not already offering these suggested courses, they are currently available in the course catalog. If you plan to replace the Advanced Career Training titles on the Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL), you should apply for approval as soon as possible. If you need more information, please contact your account manager.

*We previously communicated Advanced Hospital Coding and CCS Prep (Voucher Included) (GES104) course revisions would come into effect on September 11, 2018. Due to an expedited revision process, this course will now be available on July 31, 2018.

Getting Started with Self-Paced Tutorials

When we launch the Self-Paced Tutorial (SPT) option next month, your students will be able to choose which learning modality — self-paced or instructor-led — works best for them.

If you offer a Fundamentals course that has a SPT counterpart, here’s what you need to know to get started.

How do I find SPT courses?

You will find the SPT counterpart to an instructor-led Fundamentals course with the phrase (Self-Paced Tutorial) in the title listing:

This SPT counterpart looks like a different course, is it?

Not exactly. The content of the SPT counterpart is the same as the instructor-led course, but the learning modalities are different. If a Fundamentals course has both options, students can choose which method is best for them and gain the same knowledge.

How do I add Self-Paced Tutorial courses to my catalog?

You will be alerted when we add more SPT options to our catalog. If you enabled the auto-add feature, these courses will appear in your catalog upon release. If you manually add courses, click “Add to Catalog” to ensure the SPT option is available to your students in the OIC.

Is pricing different?

Default pricing for the SPT counterpart is the same as the instructor-led course it corresponds to. However, you can adjust the price of the SPT in your back end as you see fit.

More information on adding, removing, or changing the price of courses can be found in our Mini OAC Workflows FAQ.

What about accreditation?

If you offer accredited Fundamentals courses, the SPT counterpart will also need accreditation. We have worked with the Project Management Institute, Staff Development for Educators, and ALLEGRA Learning Solutions to get courses accredited in the past, so we can assist you in the process. Please contact our Partner Help Desk for more information.

Course Discontinuations and Replacements

Exciting new course modalities are coming soon!

We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of online continuing education. We know that many of today’s continuing education students need flexibility, so we created a new learning modality to fit into their busy lives.

This summer, we’re adding a Self-Paced Tutorial (SPT) counterpart to many courses in our Fundamentals catalog. Students can select the SPT option in lieu of the traditional instructor-led method and complete the course on their own schedule.

We also created some brand-new courses that will use the Self-Paced Tutorial module exclusively, so be sure to keep an eye out for those!

What makes the Self-Paced Tutorial option different?

The content of the Fundamentals course and its STP counterpart are the same, but the new STP version offers greater flexibility to your students. Here is how:

Self-Paced Tutorial Instructor-Led Course
  1. All content is made available to students immediately after they register
  2. Students can work through the content at their own speed within the course term
  3. Course must be completed in three months
  4. Students can start the course any time.
  1. Content is released one module at a time throughout the course term
  2. Students learn on an instructor-led track that follows biweekly lesson plans
  3. Course must be completed in six weeks
  4. Classes have a fixed monthly start date.
This looks familiar, is this a new option?

Yes and no. We piloted the SPT option for a handful of Fundamentals courses, all of which are currently open for enrollment:

  • Explore a Career as an Administrative Assistant
  • Handling Medical Emergencies
  • Introduction to Natural Health and Healing
  • Medical Math
  • Medical Terminology: A Word Association Approach
  • Understanding Adolescents
  • Twelve Steps to a Successful Job Search
  • Spanish for Medical Professionals

Feedback for the initial SPT rollout was overwhelmingly positive, so we will extend this option to 120 more courses in three phases and release 75 standalone SPT-only courses.

What does this mean for me?

When a SPT option is available, it will be listed with “Self-Paced Tutorial” in the course title. You can choose to include or exclude the SPT option from your Fundamentals catalog. However, if you choose to offer only the one learning method, your school may not populate in the search results since users will only see schools that offer both modalities.

What’s next?

Stay tuned! We will announce more SPT courses in the coming weeks, as well as demonstrations, best practices, and suggested pricing.

Important Changes to our Catalog

Our catalog is constantly changing, but that’s a good thing! Currently, we maintain approximately 800 relevant courses that support some of the market’s most in-demand careers. Read below about how you can supplement the following to-be-discontinued courses and build your continuing education program offerings.

Advanced Career Training:

● Professional Bookkeeping with QuickBooks 2017 (Software Included) (GES289)

Intuit no longer produces QuickBooks 2017, so our “software included” course will be retired on July 31, 2018. However, students with previous access to the 2017 software can enroll in Professional Bookkeeping with QuickBooks 2017 (GES277). Additionally, Professional Bookkeeping with QuickBooks 2018 (Software Included) will launch in July, so your students can enhance their financial literacy or start an accounting career with the latest bookkeeping software.

● Personal Fitness Trainer (GES115) and Advanced Personal Fitness Trainer (GES105)

In lieu of these two courses, which will be retired on October 8, 2018, our catalog has more comprehensive options to prepare for a personal training career:

  • NASM Certified Personal Trainer + Corrective Exercise (GES162) focuses on corrective exercise and assessment, closing with a certificate from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. This course also teaches muscle activation and inhibitory techniques, opening career pathways in athletic training and physical therapy.
  • Successful athletes need behind-the-scenes training, so personal trainers with performance enhancement expertise are in high demand. NASM Personal Trainer + Performance Enhancement (GES161) teaches integrated, total-body personal training and concludes with National Academy of Sports Medicine certification, the preferred credential of sports training professionals.

● Introduction to ASP.NET (asp)

ASP.NET will be retired on August 1, 2018, but our catalog has several other computer programming courses that give your students an edge in the digital job market. Courses like Introduction to Java (jab) or Introduction to PHP and MySQL (iph) are ideal for learning a new server-side programming language and building a cutting-edge portfolio.

What Partners Need to Do:

You do not need to take any action as the discontinued course will be removed from your catalog automatically on the above-mentioned dates. If you are not currently offering any courses in either Advanced Career Training or Fundamentals, contact your account manager about expanding your program offerings.

What Enrolled Students Need to Do:

Students currently enrolled in these courses will able to finish the course with no change to the curriculum.
