Health care continues to be one of the fastest-growing sectors, and pharmacy tech is a profession in top demand. Many states require pharmacy technician certification, so there is a huge opportunity for training providers to offer a pharmacy technician certification course. 

What Is a Pharmacy Technician? 

Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers. They interact with patients to collect information, fill a prescription, and answer questions. They prepare and package medications for distribution to patients under the supervision of a pharmacist. In most states, pharmacy technicians can compound or mix some medications. They can also operate automated dispensing equipment when filling prescription orders. 

There is also a lot of clerical work involved. For instance, pharmacy technicians take inventory and order supplies and medications. They encode patient information along with their prescriptions into a database. 

Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies in hospitals, healthcare facilities, and grocery stores. Other work environments are research labs, pharmaceutical companies, and health insurance firms. 

Job Outlook and Salary 

With an aging population and increasing rates of chronic diseases, there is a growing need for prescription medications. As pharmacists perform more patient care work like administering flu shots, pharmacy technicians take on more tasks previously done by pharmacists. 


There is a steadily growing demand for pharmacy technicians. The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) expects the pharmacy technician job market to grow 4% from 2019 to 2029. A JobRx report projects a higher growth rate of 7% between 2018 and 2028. 

Most states require pharmacy technicians to be trained and certified. As such, the demand for a pharmacy technician certification course continues to be strong. 


According to the BLS, pharmacy technicians earn a median annual wage of $35,100 as of May 2020. Hospitals tend to pay more, with a median salary of $39,290. The highest 10% earned more than $50,430. 

Pharmacy Technician Certification 

Many states regulate pharmacy technicians. They usually require technicians to take formal education or training programs. Even where it is not required, undergoing a pharmacy technician course could make it easier to secure a job. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) offers certification, primarily the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation. Applicants must complete a pharmacy technician course in the USA, for example, ed2go’s PTCB-accredited pharmacy technician course with an exam voucher included, or equivalent work experience, and pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam® (PTCE®).

For those who want to take the PTCE, our Pharmacy Technician Online Certification Training is a leading online course for pharmacy technicians. It is an accredited online pharmacy technician course and a registered pharmacy technician course by the PTCB. 

The pharmacy technician course includes an introduction to pharmacy and pharmacy law and ethics, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacology, communication skills and billing, and lab practice. It is 400-course hours that can be completed in 12 months. Our pharmacy technician prep course will help applicants get a passing score on the PTCB exam.  

An exam voucher is included in the course fee.  Also, part of our Pharmacy Technician Online Certification Training course is an option to perform a 100-hour clinical externship to gain experience.

What is the Army Credentialing Assistance (CA) Program? 

The Army CA program provides Active Duty, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard Soldiers an opportunity to pursue technical and industry-recognized professional credentials, completely online, with funding from the military. It is a voluntary program that provides financial assistance for off-duty training to pursue and earn credentials. Some popular choices are information technology (IT), cybersecurity, project management, and medical billing and coding. According to the U.S. Army, credentialing assistance keeps the Army competitive with its counterparts in the civilian community and develops a Soldier’s skills.  The program is a result of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2012. At that time, it began offering Army credentialing assistance in pilot programs at the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. Those pilots are now well-established, helping the Army live up to its goal of contributing to Total Army readiness. The Army says the program also helps retain quality Soldiers and prepare them for meaningful employment when they transition from service in the military.  

Take Advantage of a New Funding Opportunity 

An increase in credentialing strengthens the military as well as the broader community. Improved qualifications help combat veterans’ unemployment levels when they leave the service. The Army will fund up to $4,000 to qualifying soldiers per fiscal year to increase their skills, credentials, and professionalism. This funding covers various educational needs like fees, textbooks, materials, training, study guides, textbooks, and the cost of certification exams. With those tools, you have another group of interested students you can serve at your institution.  

Increase Enrollments 

Due to the growing need for educational alternatives among Soldiers, you can enter a newer, untapped market that can provide renewable annual enrollments. Soldiers seeking additional credentialing, both within their military occupation specialty (MOS) and outside of it, have quite a bit to draw them to the Army CA program. Industry Insights: Careers in Medical Billing

Medical billers play an important role in the healthcare system as hospitals and other medical facilities rely on prompt billing practices to ensure a healthy flow of revenue for the continued care of patients.  

When beginning a career in medical billing, not only will students enter a growing healthcare field, but also starting a job that patients, physicians, insurance providers, and other healthcare workers can’t succeed without. Curious? Here’s what students need to know:  

What is the difference between medical billing and medical coding? 

While the terms medical billing and coding are often used synonymously, medical billers and medical coders actually perform very different roles. Medical coders are the people who gather information on patient records and assign the proper codes for patient diagnoses which are then used by medical billers. Medical billers are responsible for submitting patient records once the appropriate codes have been assigned to government agencies and insurance companies. Their work ensures that payment is received for services that have been provided in the care of a patient. Our new Medical Billing Specialist course offers valuable training in legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts that are central to this field, including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance, fraud and abuse in medical billing, and third-party payer guidelines. Students will also understand all phases of the revenue cycle, including patient registration, charge capture, medical coding, claim submission, data analytics, payer reimbursement, patient billing, and collection practices to prepare them for a rewarding healthcare career. 

Are there jobs for medical billers?  

According to Burning Glass, there were nearly 30,000 jobs posted nationwide for medical billers in the last year. Even more qualified medical billers will be needed soon as a 13.5 percent growth in employment is expected in this field during the next 10 years, according to Burning Glass Technologies.  

What kind of education is needed to become a medical biller?  

For a career in medical billing, one will first need to obtain a high school diploma or GED. Students will then need to enroll in a program that will provide them with valuable professional training and experience with medical billing to increase the prospects of landing a job. Our new Medical Billing Specialist course provides students with the necessary hands-on experience and real-world examples they need to have comprehensive, up-to-date training in medical billing that can set them apart from other candidates. Like our course, many certificate programs can be completed entirely online in one year or less, allowing students to begin working in an externship or similar situation to gain experience as soon as they complete their coursework.  

Do students need an industry certification?  

While students will most likely need professional training to enter a career as a medical biller, certification is not always required. However, certification shows potential employers that they have a commitment to professional success and possess in-depth knowledge of the standards used in the industry. Earning a recognized medical billing certification like the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) or Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) may also help students earn a higher salary and be more competitive in the job market.  

What kind of salary do medical billers earn?  

Burning Glass reports that the annual median salary for medical billers is $32,172. However, according to the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) 2019 Salary Survey, medical billers who have earned the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) certification have an average annual salary of $55,078.  

How does someone get started in this career field?

The Graphic Design with Photoshop course from ed2go was developed a few years ago to provide beginning and aspiring graphic designers with the skills they need to enter a new career. However, we felt that our course could use some revamping to offer more hands-on, interactive learning that students could apply in the real world—no matter their career field 

Previously, the course focused on creating marketing materials using Photoshop. Its learning path started by teaching students how to interact with clients and contained one lesson on design fundamentals. A typical lesson had eight hours of textbook reading with about one hour of online course content. Many of the projects taught in the course would typically be completed in InDesign or Illustrator in the real world, not Photoshop, and we felt that the 200-hour program length was unnecessarily long. Overall it was a good course for students to get their feet wet in the world of graphic design, but we felt it could be improved. 

We have made some big changes…for the better 

We now teach graphic design fundamentals bolstered by hands-on projects using Photoshop CC in each lesson of the Graphic Design with Photoshop course. The redesigned learning path will introduce students to Photoshop CC and graphic design fundamentals at the beginning of the course. Graphic design fundamentals are then reiterated as lessons progress and reinforced in each project-based lesson assignment. 

The course contains all new Screencast videos illustrating how to use Photoshop tools and create visual elements—replacing videos that were once voice-over PowerPoints. It also includes two key lessons to help boost soft skills needed for employment and guides students through building their professional portfolio using Adobe Behancea web-based site for showcasing and sharing creative work. This all combines to further give students the tools they need to be able to begin a successful career in graphic design or apply what they learned in their current career after completing the course.  

Additional changes we have made:  

  • Program hours have been reduced from 200hours down to 130hours 
  • Reliance on textbooks has been reduced by strategically replacing reading with key narrative content  
  • Lessons have been authored so the main concepts are introduced in the online portion of the course 
  • Readings are now assigned to help reinforce conceptual learning 
  • More projects have been added that will give students practice with assignments they are likely to see in the real world 
  • Graphic design concepts are taught starting with fundamentals and are reinforced throughout the course 
  • The use of rich media and video has been increased to make the course more compelling
